How can I send a fax from the Internet?

One of the most aggravating things for a blind person who works in an office environment is the fax machine. It's the one device that accessability hasn't caught up with yet.

Eventually it happens. You have to send a fax. You can't easily use the machine because of the flat pannel that makes feeling the buttons impossible, you're not sure which way to put the paper in so that the printed side will be faxed, and will you even get things lined up right so the document can be read on the other end? It makes you feel totally helpless to have a sighted person always assisting you with the fax machine.

Don't worry, the internet and a variety of email services have solved this problem. Did you know that you can send a fax from the net? Some services are free, while others have a very small monthly service charge.

Receiving a Fax

Here's a way to send and receive faxes for free online, you can even get your own free fax number.

DepositDox offers a free phone number and account where you can receive faxes. They store your faxes using secure encryption and will notify you when you receive a fax. You can store faxes in your account and even search through them. Their free account lets you store up to 1,000 pages and it provides you with a toll free fax number. There is a 250 page limit for the first month and then a document per day limit. You must use your number at least once a month or you’ll lose it. There are premium plans which removes these restrictions. I have not tested the service for accessibility.

Syndication

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated digital content, such as blogs, news feeds or podcasts. Users of RSS content use programs called feed "readers" or "aggregators": the user subscribes to a feed by supplying to his or her reader a link to the feed; the reader can then check the user's subscribed feeds to see if any of those feeds have new content since the last time it checked, and if so, retrieve that content and present it to the user.
